Coincidentally, I just had to have my beloved 21 yr old cat (thats 89 yrs in human terms) euthanized..."put to sleep". PLEASE don't try to do something like that at home unless you are a vet or doctor. I'm an RN and would NEVER attempt such a thing. Mistakes happen, you could put him into a coma, or cause him worse pain or more fear than an experienced vet and their staff who do this sort of thing several times a week. TRY to be there to hold your loved one as he drifts off....it takes only seconds. My cat actually had a good relationship with our vet, and she was wonderful. I was weeping, she (the vet) was weeping...but he went quickly and PAINLESSLY. If your animal is frightened of going to the vet (hint: those of you with healthy pets, do everything you can to make visiting the vet positive experience. They pick up on your fear and anxiety!) ask the vet for a pill of valium or something similar for him to take before you leave the house so he's relaxed and "dopey" when you get to the vet, then don't spend a lot of time saying good-bye, he'll pick up on the emotions. Wait until afterward to grieve.

Call the Vet. ask if the injection for this purpose can be purchased. Take your precious baby and hold him/her close into your chest, rubbing it while you are telling him/her how much you love them as someone else is administering the shot. Let him/her know how much they were loved while they are passing over to Gods Heavenly place he's prepared for all our furry babies. If it were me, I'd be crying and kissing mine while they were passing on.

No, please take your cat to a Veterinarian where your cat will receive a painless injection and go into a permanenet sleep. Allowing your cat to go "peacefully at home" and hoping he/she goes in their sleep may add to his/her suffering.

Question

Can humans take this for pain?

I have soft-tissue pain and OTC pain pills don't work and I heard Tramadol works. It kind of scares me because celebrities who died from drug overdose had Tramadol in their system (Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Anna Nicole Smith, Chris Farley, Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson, etc.). But if I just take one or two of these pills a day, is that okay? I know it's for pets but us humans can take it too right?

Under no circumstances should you take tramadol unless specifically told to do so by your physician.

answer 2
Tramadol is tramadol...regardless of whether it is prescribed for your pet or yourself ...it's still the exact same medication. I am personally prescribed tramadol to control chronic back pain. But with that said, it would be advisable for you to seek out and discuss your situation with a chronic pain specialist or primary care physician BEFORE taking the tramadol to ensure it's the proper medication for your specific problem.

Yes you absolutely can take tramadol for pain. The person below me has no idea what he/she is talking about saying dogs take dog medicine and people take people medicine. That's stupid. Tramadol is not an animal medication to begin with. Tramadol was made for human use. Vets just recently started giving it to animals although it is not FDA approved for use in animals yet. So yes to answer your question you can take tramadol. And before someone calls me an idiot let me inform you all that I do take tramadol and have taken it for 6 years. It is in fact a human medication and it works wonders for my scoliosis without making me "high" I would start out with one every 6 hours first to see how your system handles it. It has a tendency to make you sick if you aren't careful. Good Luck

Tramadol is a human medication that veterinarians use off label to treat pain in dogs and cats. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you ever use a medication prescribed by a veterinarian for your pet for yourself. If you feel you need something for pain, you should see your physician.

Question

Tramadol

My 16 yr old chihuahua is on tramadol 50mg. 1/4 tablet 2x daily. I have 2 questions: Does tramadol come in a liquid form? Giving her the tablet form is difficult and I have to crush the tablet to get it down. According to directions I'm not suppose to do this, but I have no alternative. Is it ok to crush?

Crushing the tablet is not healthy for you. If you breath in the powder it can cause serious side effects. You should find a pharmacy in your neighborhood that does compounding and see if they can put this in liquid form for you.

My vet told us to use sliced cheese to give my pets meds. Use just enough to wrap around the med and mush it around the pill so they can't get it out (sliced cheese works best because it molds very easily). They love it. You can also use peanut butter, but it is messy.

Tramadol should not be crushed because inhaling the powder can cause serious, sometimes life-threatening side effects. However, cutting the tablet in half, or even in quarters using a pill splitter is safe. Tramadol is not available as a liquid. However, a pharmacy that specializes in compounding may be able to prepare a dosage form that is easier for you to give.

Question

Is the tramadol given to humans equal to the dosage for dogs?

I know that the mgs of tramadol given to a dog depends on weight and severity and i know that tramadol is also a pain medication for humans, but are the amounts of mgs equivalent for both forms of human and dog tramadol? For example is 50 mgs of tramadol prescribed to a human the same as 50 mgs of tramadol prescribed to a dog?

A very good question indeed! The dog dosage is the same as a hman dosage - we use the drug to help with chronic back pain. We were initially worried about giving such a large dose, but it appears to be about right based on our dogs weight and the stated dog dosage gudelines. Still, It does not really make sense that humans and dogs would take the same amount.

Generally speaking, you should never give acetaminophine to dogs unless given very specific instructions from your veterinarian. It is toxic to dogs at any beneficial dose.
Acetaminophine, on rare occasion, is prescribed as part of a narcotic pain combination (i.e. Vicodin, Tylenol #3). This is only done if your veterinarian feels the benefit outweighs the risk.

I put it in wet dog food & give to her along with her breakfast. At night, everyone gets a treat of wet dog food when she gets her 2nd dose. Those pill pockets are expensive, the wet dog food works best in my opinion.
